Twelve years ago, the cries of persecuted minority groups in Northern Iraq reached us and pierced our hearts. Cries of grief, of families torn apart, of lives uprooted in a desperate rush to survive.

We couldn't look away. We lost sleep as our conscience was pricked, and eventually we went, and we stayed. We sat among the displaced Yezidi community who had fled Sinjar, leaving behind everything in a single moment, holding onto nothing but hope for their lives. They had lost more than words could carry, yet they offered us their stories, their strength, and, so often, their smiles.

We met Syrian survivors of unspeakable devastation, starting over from nothing in slum dwellings. And they undid us. Their gentleness, their hospitality, their quiet dignity challenged everything we thought we knew. We learned what generosity really looks like from people who have almost nothing and still give with open hands and full hearts.

Giving isn't just a gesture here. It's a culture, a living expression of love and resilience, passed on not as a burden but as an honor. That realization changed us.
